Netopia 5300 Router Setup

 

 

Before You Begin

 

Before you get started you should go through the following checklist* to ensure that you have everything that you will need to successfully set up your Router.

 

 

1. Router

 

 

2. Serial console cable – may be beige or black

3. All necessary IP information – can be obtained through iBizConsole

 

 

4. RJ45 Ethernet Cable– may be gray or blue

 

 

5. Power supply

Note: If you do not receive all of the above equipment please call your Service Provider before installation.

 

Setup by Console

1. Remove router, serial console cable, RJ45 Ethernet Cable and power supply from box

2. Plug in power supply from router to wall

 

 

3. Plug in serial console cable into the COM1 port on back of your PC (COM1 is usually the top port and has male pins)

 

 

a. Plug serial console cable into the back of the router (labeled "Console")

 

 

4. Turn router power on

    a. Button light will turn green

    b. You will see red flashing lights and then a sustained red flashing light – don't worry it's normal

 

 

1. Open up a "Hyper Terminal" program

NOTE: yours may be located elsewhere under "Programs"

    a. Click "Start" on your taskbar

    b. To "Programs"

    c. To "Accessories"

    d. To "Communications"

    e. Click on your Hyper Terminal program

      i. See diagram below

 

 

2. Add in connection Name "Netopia"

3. Click "OK"

    a. Window below will appear

 

 

4. Under "Connect Using" select "Direct to Com1"

5. Click "OK"

    a. Window below will appear

 

 

6. Switch "Bits per second" to 9600

7. Switch "Data bits" to 8

8. Switch "Parity" to None

9. Switch "Stop bits: to 1

10. Switch "Flow control" to None

11. Click "OK"

    a. Window below appear

 

 

Note: Use arrow keys on your keyboard to move cursor

12. Hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

    a. Screen above shows actual connection

      i. If nothing happens after you hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard, check to see that the serial console cable is plugged into COM1

      ii. Now hit the <Escape> (Esc) button on your keyboard

 

 

13. Verify firmware on your Netopia router (e.g. Netopia v4.10 – top of screen) Make sure that you are using v4.10.

 

 

14. Navigate using the arrow keys on your keyboard to "Line Encoding and hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

    a. Set "Line Encoding" to B8ZS and hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

15. Navigate using the arrow keys on your keyboard to "Framing Mode" and hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

    a. Set "Framing Mode" to ESF and hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

16. Set "Number of DS0 Channels" to 24 and hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

17. Navigate using the arrow keys on your keyboard to "Channel Data Rate" and hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

    a. Set "Channel Data Rate" to Nx64k

18. Navigate using the arrow keys on your keyboard to "Data Link Encapsulation" and hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

    a. Set "Data Link Encapsulation" to HDLC and hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

19. Navigate using the arrow keys on your keyboard to "Next Screen" using down arrow key

 

 

20. Your router configuration should look identical to above.

    a. Hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

 

 

Note: For steps 21 – 25 refer only to the IP addresses falling under the "WAN IP Range" heading

21. Use the "down arrow" key to "Address Translation Enabled" and change to "No" by using the <Tab> key on your keyboard

    a. Hit <Enter> on your keyboard

22. Use the "down arrow" key to "IP Addressing" and change to "Numbered" by hitting the <Enter> key on y our keyboard and the "down arrow key" to change it to "Numbered"

    a. Hit <Enter> on your keyboard

23. Use the "down arrow" key to "Address Translation Enabled" and change to "No"

24. Use the "down arrow" key to "Local WAN IP Address"

    a. Replace existing IP address with the local WAN IP Address supplied by Upstream provider (in iBizConsole same as: CPE xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)

    b. Hit <Enter> key on your keyboard

25. Replace the "Local WAN IP Mask" to 255.255.255.252

    a. Hit <Enter> on your keyboard

26. Replace "Remote IP Address" with the Gateway IP supplied by Upstream provider (in the iBizConsole same as: Carrier xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)

    a. Hit <Enter> key on your keyboard

27. Replace "Remote IP Mask" with the Subnet Mask supplied by Upstream provider (in the iBizConsole under: "WAN IP Range")

    a. Hit <Enter> key on your keyboard

28. Go to "Next Screen" and hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

 

 

29. Replace "Ethernet IP Address" with Gateway IP of Subnet block supplied by Upstream provider (if using iBizConsole information it is the first listed: Router IP Address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)

    a. Hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

30. Replace the "Ethernet Subnet Mask" with Subnet Mask supplied by Upstream provider (if using iBizConsole information it is the "Subnet Mask" under the "Routed LAN IP Addresses" heading)

    a. Hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

31. Replace "Domain Name" with hookupz.com and

    a. Hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

32. Replace "Primary DNS" with 216.98.128.70

    a. Hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

33. Replace "Secondary Domain Name Server" with 216.98.138.70

    a. Hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

34. Replace "Default IP Gateway" with Gateway address supplied by upstream provider (if using iBizConsole information it is the same as: Carrier xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)

    a. Hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

35. Turn "IP Address Serving" to Off using the <Tab> key

a. Hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

36. Go to "Next Screen"

    a. Hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

 

 

37. Create a "Write Access Name" to "whateveryouwouldlike"

38. Create a "Write Access Password" to "whateveryouwouldlike"

39. Use downward arrow keys to "Restart Device"

    a. Hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

Congratulations! You are all finished.

 

Setup by Telnet

The router that you receive from hookupz.com comes pre-configured.

 

 

1. Plug in power supply from router to wall

2. Plug in RJ45 Ethernet Cable from the back of router (use one of the "Ethernet" ports – see diagram above) to your NIC card on your PC – use a straight through cable.

 

 

1. Turn router power on

    a. Button light will turn green and you will see red flashing lights and then a sustained red flashing light – don't worry it's normal

2. Turn router power on

 

Configure Your PC's IP Address

1. Make sure your computer is turned on

 

 

2. Click on "Start"

3. Click on "Settings"

4. Click on "Control Panel"

 

 

5. Click on the "Network" icon

 

 

6. Under the "Configuration" tab, locate your computer's NIC card – TCP/IP

7. Click on "Properties"

 

 

8. Select the "IP Address" tab if it is not already selected

9. Select "Specify an IP address"

10. In the "IP Address" field add a usable LAN Gateway IP Address supplied by your upstream provider (if using iBizConsole information choose from the listed router block – Router xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) Do not use the 1st Router number; this is the Gateway IP

11. Change the "Subnet Mask" to the LAN Subnet Mask supplied by your upstream provider (if using iBizConsole information it is the "Subnet Mask xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx under the "Routed IP Address" heading)

 

 

12. Select the "Gateway" Tab and enter the LAN Gateway IP Address supplied by your upstream provider into the "New Gateway" field (if using iBizConsole information it is the 1st "Router xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" under the "Routed IP Address" heading)

    a. Click "Add"

 

 

13. Select the "DNS Configuration" tab

    a. Select "Enable DNS"

    b. Add "hookupz.com" into the "Domain" field

    c. In the "DNS Server Search Order" field enter the following IP addresses: (in this exact order)

      i. 216.98.128.70 - click "Add"

      ii. 216.98.138.70 - click "Add"

14. Click "OK"

    a. Your computer may ask you to restart. Select "Yes/OK"

 

 

15. Let your computer system reboot and continue

16. Click "Start" and select "Run"

 

 

17. Type in telnet and click "OK"

 

18. Click on "Connect" in the Telnet toolbar

19. Select "Remote System"

 

 

20. Under "Host Name" type in the LAN Gateway IP Address supplied by your upstream provider (if using iBizConsole information it is the 1st "Router xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" under the "Routed IP Address" heading)

21. Click "Connect"

 

 

22. Create a "Write Access Name" to "whateveryouwouldlike"

23. Create a "Write Access Password" to "whateveryouwouldlike"

24. Write down the Access Name and Access Password to keep filed in a safe place

25. Use arrow keys to "Restart Device"

    a. Hit the <Enter> key on your keyboard

Verifying Your WAN

 

 

1. Plug in RJ45 Ethernet Cable that was supplied with the Router in to the LINE 1 port of your router

2. Plug in the opposite end of the Ethernet cable in to the T-1 connection that the T-1 installer has provided to you.

 

 

3. On the top of your Router you see a red Flashing light.

    a. This light will turn Green when The RJ45 connection to your WAN syncs up
